My ideas for HS2 (if Eastern Leg isn’t built)

What reason would there be for building a 3rd high speed rail link in to Central London? Especially a link that would be heading north. Euston HS2 has been designed to cope with the long distance intercity traffic that currently flows in to Kings’ Cross and St. Pancras, therefore scrapping the eastern branch (which starts in the Midlands, let alone not having to be built down in to the south east) and replacing it with a HS4 link would be an excessive way to spend even more money on something that already has a solution.

There are some future projections that might necessitate it or something like it. If HS2 is built without the eastern leg, but subsequently loses all its tph serving routes along the West Coast, then we might find outselves in a very similar situation with the ECML as we do with the WCML today.
