Just booked some very cheap flights to Moss in Norway with Ryanair for May Bank Holiday weekend, and a reasonably priced hotel. Wanted to go to Moss for reasons of vanity and comedy (it being my name).

Just looked at the train into Oslo, £23.80 equivalent return - not cheap for a short ride, but it must be done.

Anyone have any tips for seeing things whilst in the region? Anyone recommend a rail excursion for another day (90 mins max - Mrs moans beyond that), also any freight places near Moss / Oslo i might be able to sneak off to?

I'm presuming the pubs are going to be expensive, anyone have a rough idea what I should expect to pay for a pint of the local brew? Any other tips / recommendations appreciated. Cheers!

About £7.00 seems to be the average for Norway according to the web. I visited on a cruise in 2012 and it was about £5.50 then, everything was very expensive a snack meal about £12.

The Viking Ship Museum is excellent. http://www.visitoslo.com/en/product/?TLp=181482
Other interesting museums in the same area.
You can get a bus there, but the best way is using the harbour ferry.
At the harbour, the "Nobel Peace Centre" building used to be Oslo West station. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oslo_West_Station

All local travel available on the 24-hour transport ticket (NOK90).
Moss (Rygge) is a nice little airport. Free shuttle bus to the station.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I've only paid £50 each for the return flights, so don't mind spending a bit extra on beer and food. I'm not made of money, but I try and look at like this, I could spend £4.00 a pint in Leeds city centre, or £6.00 in Oslo, yes it's a 50% increase, but for me it's the experience that counts.

It's this weekend that I'm off. I don't land at Rygge until 23:05, does anyone know if I'll still be able to get a train to Moss so late?

DB has last train from Rygge to Moss at 2256 on Saturday night..:(

http://www.ostfold-kollektiv.no/artikkel.aspx?maincat=5608&cat=5673&id=6071&mid=6071

Shows the local bus services in Norwegian, which I can't read much. Rygge is only mentioned once, but they don't seem to run late generally.

The express bus to Oslo that connects off the Ryanair flight doesn't seem to stop in Moss.

I wonder if it's worth talking to as many people in the airport queue and on the plane as possible to see if anyone is going to Moss and share a taxi, or get one ordered through your hotel.

The price for a taxi seems to be 315 or 365 kr depending on when 'night' starts. (£27-31)

There is nothing to be gained, and two hours wasted, by getting the express bus to Oslo and the last train back to Moss, as that works out at 321 kr per person.

So far as I can see, the last bus from the airport to Moss (route F11) departs at 2200.

Hi All, I'm now back from Norway. Upon arrival at Moss Airport I asked the tourist information desk (surprisingly still open at 23:15), if there was any public transport options for getting to Moss, but the answer was 'no'. So I had to get a taxi, which cost me 42 Kroner (£35.50) for a 12 minute journey. I wonder if this is why so many Ryanair flights must land there late, as they might be cheaper landing slots?

Anyway, Moss was a lovely little town, the ferry to Horten was worth doing at 4 Kroner each way. Horten was nothing special though. I saw two freight trains pass through Moss, both heading North, one was a double headed container train of sorts (they were square containers, so not sure what they actually were), the other was hauling engineering equipment. On both occasions I was too far away to get a photo or film - sods law. Around 6 passenger trains an hour (local, regional, inter-city) go through Moss, the station is small, and there is no ticket office, but the ticket machine is very easy to use and has an English option. There is an office on the platform with a member of staff in, but it's not obvious until you see him / her come out when a train is approaching. To get across the platforms there are two options, both a pedestrian footbridge, or directly crossing the tracks on a wooden crossing. I didn't see a single person use the bridge while I was there.

Out of the 3 days I was there it threw it down all day on Sunday, the day I went to Oslo, which put a bit of a dampener on it to be honest. The trains were excellent, cinema style flip up seats for space optimisation, and they were very comfortable. Seats were arranged in a 3 - 2 configuration. The return fare to Oslo was around 23 Kroner for a 50 minute journey, not an excessive price, but not 'cheap' either. My ticket was not checked either way. A one hour tram ticket cost 3 Kroner, I didn't bother with a day ticket, as I got a tram one way out of the city, then walked back to the Central Station via several key sites I wanted to see (and got truly soaked in the process).

The journey back to Moss Airport was seamless, a single ticket to Rygge was around 4 Kroner (I forget the exact price), the journey was 6 minutes (1 stop). At Rygge station the free shuttle bus to the airport was already there waiting, and it filled up with people disembarking the southbound train I was on. The bus then drove around to the Northbound platform to await any passengers coming to Rygge airport from the South - none did, and it's a good job as the bus was full.

Journey time to Moss Airport on the bus from Rygge station was around 7 minutes. Photography at Moss Airport is banned and there are warning signs all over the fences....

All in all, this was a good little break, prices in Norway for food and drink are roughly double what you pay here, and for 'imported' items such as English Cider you will pay even more. I was paying an average of £8.00 a pint for the local pilsner which was 4.7% ABV, and to be fair not that amazing (I prefer ale). I did go to the Amundsen Microbrewery pub in Oslo and drank some stronger stuff, but that was about £10 for a 400ml glass. I would recommend Moss and Oslo to others based upon my experience, my flight was very cheap to get there which was counteracted by the Norwegian prices, but I didn't let that spoil my experience.

I'll be flying back from Rygge in early July so this report was useful thanks. Doing the Oslo to Dombas/Andalsnes route amongst others. I've been really impressed with the price and ease of booking on NSB.

I'd be interested to read about your journey when you've done it. This was my first visit to Norway, but it certainly won't be my last.
