Hey all

I'm a bit curious really, basically I use Nivea everyday for my face, the mens one in the blue tub, and have noticed if I don't use it for a day my skins becomes very dry and acually cracks, now I don't mean little bits, I'm talking actual visible, red and sore cracks. Its very painful and uncomfortable, but then I slap some Nivea on and hey presto all is well again, you'd never know. My hands were the same for a while and I was told it might be dermatitus (not even going to pretend to know how to spell that) I've also had it on my shoulders in the past but that cleared up too. I tried my girlfriends moisturiser a while ago and it was pointless, it was too thin and just stung. I've used it for about 3 years now after I started getting dry skin around my nose in the winter and just got into the habit of putting it on everyday.

Is this actually some sort of skin problem? Should I think about seeing a doctor?

It is possible that you are prone to dermatitis and the moisturiser is keeping it at bay - mosturising is the recommended treatment for mild dermatitis . The other possibility is that the skin has reacted to the moisturiser use by reducing oil production and thus it drys out if you stop using it. Dermatitis does have a tendency to come and go. It is especially common in winter as modern heating does tend to dry the skin out excessively, as can cold frosty weather.

Mild dryness is very common but explained crackling and splitting should be discussed with your GP. You may want to skip the moisturizer before you see them so that they can see the problem. I doubt it is anything serious though - if it was I doubt something like Nivea would be very effective. If it becomes more bothersome you may want to consider a petroleum based moisturizer like E45 or similar.

Thats some great advice, much obliged :) I will try going a few days without it and see if some moisture starts to come back of its own accord, failing that I might try some petroluem based products, see if they help at all.

I've done some googling on it and seems its not uncommon at all so at least I'm not some mutatnt freak :p

Speak to your GP. They are much better placed to give advice than here, and are more likely to be right!
