An Eastern National Leyland National got smashed up on its first day in service in the mid 70s.
Lothian Buses Volvo B9TL/Wright Eclipse Gemini 390, SN11EDX, was gutted by fire at Oxgangs last night (16/12/13) while working service 4. The cause of the fire was vandalism and the police are now seeking a 14-16 year old youth who was seen leaving the bus at Oxgangs at around 2230, shortly before 390 went up in flames. All those on board including the driver escaped safely.
390's future is presently uncertain although stories I've been hearing suggest that it is beyond repair and will probably be written off.
Its a while since wev had anything like this happen round here and hope the police catch him! Wonder if they'll use insurance to replace it, or wate till we next order more deckers.
Be nice to have some new dubble deck vehicles as some of the tridents although not all are aging.
Judging by what I heard in Central last night, it'll be a write off.
From what I could tell, the whole structure of the bus has been badly damaged, however it sounded as if the hard drive may be intact, so they may be able to get the CCTV.
I'm sure they'll get the insurance payout, but I'm not sure it'll be replaced until the next lot of deckers are ordered. After all, there are still more Tridents in storage that can be brought back into service (I've heard it mentioned a couple of times that there may be a 500 back out, but I don't know if there's any truth in that)
I think we'll have the 04 plate ones for a while yet, especially with the awful new screens they're putting on them.
The next new buses should be the new single deck hybrids, which I think are due to arrive in a month or two. I'm not certain as I've not been keeping up to date with what's going on recently.

I had heard that 390 almost split in two when it was recovered and great care had to be taken to get it on to the recovery vehicle. It sounds as if the chassis also took a hit.
The new Hybrids, I believe, are for the 30 and are to Euro 6 spec.
I would guess that the new 7900s on iether 2s or 30s will mean curtains for the remaining darts, some of which are still pritty reasonable and if thats the case the volvos will Id think be split between depots
Twenty Darts are to go when the hybrids arrive - off the top of my head there are around 35 still in Lothian stock. The 'green' Darts 53-60 will survive this cull and will come off with the next again delivery of single-deckers. The hybrids are, AFAIK, all to go to Longstone.
I'd think the one that hit a tree in London today will be off to scrap, unsure of the age but the BBC show clip showed the fire brigade chopping it up to get people out

A very significant bus was almost destroyed - in fact it would have probably been scrapped if it was not such an important bus - the Spirit of London bus.

Not fully destroyed, but worth a mention I feel!
This ALX400 that hit a bridge earlier today in south-west London could end up being written off:

Who's was it?

I've since heard that the hard drive got fried along with 390, so unless witnesses come forward finding the culprit responsible for its destruction may prove impossible.
Apparently once the fire was out, control then asked the driver if the bus could be driven back to base despite it being little more than a burnt-out wreck!hock::roll:
Shame.
But from the description of it being a young teenager, I doubt much would've happened anyway.
While they do occasionally ask what at first appear to be silly questions* like that, I think that's more likely to be rumour that's spread and is now being told by some as fact. Particularly as the fire took a while to put out and they already had people there.
*What may seem obvious to you standing next to the bus, may not be to them as they can't see it.
You may be right there. I saw a photo of the remains of 390 after the fire had been put out and there was no way it could have been driven, especially if the rumours about it almost splitting in two during the recovery turn out to be correct.
