I'm keen to hear from people who know this route as I'm planning on travelling that way in November. Me and my partner have 4 days to kill between leaving Mumbai and arriving in Kochi. Probably stop in Goa before setting odd again. An overnight train there is on my bucket list. What would you do? Is there a good site to see options, or to see where the epic views are (so we travel that part in daylight)?

Good advice on The Man in Seat 61 https://www.seat61.com/India.htm. Whilst working in India I followed his advice on registering for the Indian Railways website and was able to book sleepers and other trains in advance at Indian Prices. 2nd Class AC is perfectly acceptable for overnight sleeper travel.

Check out the Kochi Metro while you are there. For various reasons, it's the only Indian train ride I've taken in the last 20+ years.

Train Tickets Please is a great travel agent.

He has a FB page.

I recommend 2AC sleepers.

A trip over the ghats from Mangslore to Hassan Junction was one highlight of my Dec trip.

Madgaon could be a good place to stop off en route. Well-located for some of Goa's most-famous beaches, like Palolem.

From memory, it's an overnight train ride from Kochi to Madgaon, and the same from there to Mumbai. Though that was 14 years ago, so things may have sped up since then.

Second the recommendation for 2AC. An experience not to be missed.

Thanks for those ideas. So many different train services as well, it's a lot to ponder! I'll definitely be treating us to 2AC.

I live in Goa for most of the year and am a frequent train user. Perhaps be aware that the Konkan Railway, largely single line with passing loops, experiences frequent and substantial delays. These have an inevitable knock on effect on journeys further south.

The variety in levels of services offered can be overwhelming,. As a rule of thumb, the higher train numbers (2xxxx services), tend to be prioritized by control and are faster with fewer station stops. Vandhe Bharat and Rajdhani are brands to look out for.

The Seat 61 site gives comprehensive info and is certainly worth a visit. Personally l would avoid 2nd class unreserved unless for journeys lasting under an hour. Also, travel on the Mumbai Suburban system during rush hours is not practicable with bags and not for the faint hearted under any circumstances.

When planning journeys from Mumbai it's worth remembering that southbound services pass through easily accessible PANVEL on the outskirts of the city. Some use this route to bypass Mumbai altogether, so check services from there if other options are full.

Lastly, the 1 2 go site makes it easy to book and pay for Indian train tickets without going through the drama of registering with the IRCTC site
