My wife and I recently travelled by train from Milton Keynes to Pescara on Italy's Adriatic coast and back using option 2 "by morning Eurostar & daytime high-speed trains with overnight stop in Turin or Milan" from seat61.com and similar in reverse with an overnight stop in Paris. This part of our journeys worked well but our experience of direct trains Milan <-> Pescara was dire. Both trains were an hour late and on two other days I noticed that the same trains were substantially delayed. Is this normal for Italy or for this route or were we just unlucky?
The delay to the Pescara - Milan train on our return journey meant that we missed the afternoon Milan - Paris TGV, causing us considerable inconvenience and additional expense. I booked through Rail Europe, having previously found them very reliable, and the itinerary they provided gave a 40 minute connection at Milan Centrale. Should they have known better and booked us on an earlier train? There appears to be a roughly hourly service between Pescara and Milan.
