Metrolink passenger counts

Does anyone know how the tickets that are automatically issued to Manchester CTLZ, whether the passenger wants city centre Metrolink travel or not are counted in Metrolink passenger counts?

If they are all counted then there's a gross overcount, if none are counted then there's a gross undercount.

The same really applies for tickets for journeys like Eccles to Stockport Route:Metrolink as some people may choose to walk between stations in Manchester, while others catch the tram.

I don't think TfGM will want any proper pax counts doing since it would involve them being proven wrong, where as the situation now is they can manipulate ticket stats to say whatever they want...

PS: Can anyone tell I'm not a fan of TfGM?

What they might do is work out a % of how many people do use the tram by using questionnaires and just take this as a 'standard'.

For example, I've recently found out that a PTE calculates the percentage of people travelling without a ticket by using data collectors asking people what ticket they have. Now, anyone in their right mind wouldn't own up and say they didn't have a ticket...

One thing is for sure.... there's a lot of people travelling on Manchester STNS tickets within the city who have no right to, all technically at risk of a £100 std fare.

Some of the T68a's (built 1998ish) have passenger counting equipment above the doors, may not work though.

They mainly use data from their own TVMs Tickets+season ticket tally which is roughly 14/15m a year then fill in for other types of tickets with automated passenger counts and the occasional platform surveys asking people destination and type of ticket they are traveling on.

You then have the same metrics from the rest of the rail industry allocating pte rail ticket and wayfarer sales to routes and operators, e.g. deciding how many tickets for Manchester Stations are for Victoria, how many for Piccadilly, etc...

I have seen it, yes. Other PTEs/operators seem to do ticketing surveys but not so much as method of detecting fare evasion...

A couple years ago on a tram in Amsterdam, I was asked about my ticket by a very polite lady doing a survey (with a PDA to record answers) on behalf of the local transport authority!

They are an regular, but uncommon sight in some PTE areas - Nexus have them, as does Metro in West Yorkshire and also SYPTE. I once applied for a job as a data collector with SYPTE, would have been based at Doncaster Frenchgate. One of the questions asked was:

"You are on a bus when you notice a person has an incorrect ticket and has travelled over-distance. What do you do?"

I know the correct answer but anyone else want to give it a try?

I was under the impression that this was an extra incentive for rail passengers to access the core of the city area on the Manchester Metrrolink system in the "city-centre defined area" at no extra charge. Together with the three Metroshuttle bus routes that are free to all, irrespective of holding any ticket, Manchester is very good in this respect.

Aye that's right - not you job to give out fines, or delay the train/bus.

Some might if they won't to moan about the ticket office being closed when it should be open, a ticket machine not working, the conductor not coming through to collect fares etc. However, I don't think anyone would admit to try to avoid paying.

This is for unmanned stations, DOO and stations where at least one ticket machine is working (you can probably guess where it is).
