It's a balancing act. Money facilitates enjoyment, but I wouldn't drive myself into a state where I wouldn't be able to enjoy myself anyway because of ill health. I don't want to earn shedloads really; I want enough to be able to enjoy myself and live in relative comfort.

This is basically the same principal that I adhered to from leaving University in 1966 to my retirement in 2010. I married in 1975 and was very lucky in my choice of my wife and we have had 36 very happy years together with the blessing of children who have all done well. We are now happy grandparents.

My career has covered differing industries, all of which have offered the scope of widening my horizons. I can honestly so that I have really enjoyed all the positions that I have occupied. Maybe I have been fortunate in that the salary that I have enjoyed was higher than the average, but this was not as a result of making this a main aim in life. If your employer sees that you have prospects for advancement based upon the standard of your work, then this is a reflection of how well you perform in day-to-day business life.

My wife and I have had many things to be fortunate about and we have always lived life to the full. We only had a 3-bed semi-detached house when we were first married on a modern estate, as many people did in 1975 and we have progressed gradually to the rather nice property in admittedly a much sought after location where we intend to spend the rest of our lives. enjoying our retirement.

Both my wife and I paid in the maximum amount we could into both of our company pension schemes with regard to employee contributions. It was somewhat of a financial burden at the time, but forward thinking on this point led to a good financial pension situation for both of us.
