Medium Sized Cities with Heavy Rail Metro Potential

It’s basically as we have yet to invent a word for “S-Bahn” (and of course because we don’t use the word Metro for either of our 2 urban underground systems- Tyne & Wear being more S-Bahn)

Merseyrail does seem to be transitioning to the Metro brand, though it is really an S-Bahn I guess (though with rolling stock derived from that of the Berlin U-Bahn I think things are now rather blurred!)

As we don’t have the convenient difference in operating regulations that makes the distinction easy in the country where the phrases originate, they’re bound to be.

Heavy rail metros can only really work properly if there aren’t any other trains to get in the way such as inter-cities or freights

This hasn’t stopped the London Overground, Crossrail and West Yorkshire systems.

Plymouth must be in with a shout. The Gunnislake branch already does this, and if Tavistock ever got reopened that would enhance the branch patronage. Then if a station or two were built at Plympton this could serve as a decent Park & Ride into the city centre, plus potentially reopening the railway to Yealhampton to at the very least serve Plymstock.

Leicester? The bus network there is quite good iirc, but a 4tph service from Melton Mowbray to Hinckley, and from Market Harborough to Barrow-upon-Soar with more local stations in between, especially between Wigston and Mkt Harborough. Plus, if the old line to Rugby ever got reopened (which I doubt it ever will), there's potential for another suburban service down that way.
