Are the mainline trains equipped with tripcocks...? IIRC the stretch of LUL route between HOTH and Finchley Rd still requires them.

This is rapidly becoming an urban myth that just refuses to die (like reopening the GC line.) Get a map and some crayons and see where the alleged "space" is at Old Oak for some Chiltern line platforms and it's approach lines and crossings. It just ain't going to happen without knocking down part of Well House Road or reinstating the plan to fly the GWML Up Relief/Crossail on a fly over (which now isn't happening.) If someone has access to plans that show the alleged "passive provision," it would settle the debate.
Not got the plan to hand, but it exists and there is room for a platform. It won't be in the station itself.

Physically, yes - for trains that are coming from Aylesbury. Practically, no - because none of the Chiltern drivers sign into Baker Street, and because the Chiltern trains aren't fitted with in-cab signalling.

But even if those problems were dealt with, I doubt LU would be over the moon about having diesel trains belching out fumes at Baker Street...
Even if it was practically possible I can't imagine there is sufficient capacity to do it without severe disruption to the Met service

Thanks -would you care to give an indication of where the platform would be. The only place I can envisage is on the footprint on the old "halt" just south of Wells House Road (even that may have to be relatively short.)

Other side of Old Oak Common lane I think, there will be some unused land to the bottom left of the new station.

No, that’s now assigned to buildings up to 21 stories tall. From the west side of that road to North Acton is the remaining location.

I would be willing to bet a few quid no one has told the NR strategic planners.

I think the first 165 to head down the Met tunnel would end up with some rather bent bodywork…

I don’t think this is right.

Years ago I was surprised to read that the flat sided Met line A stock was the widest stock on the whole British Railway.
Wiki confirms that it was 9ft 8 inches or 2.9 metres wide.
A stock was also as tall as BR stock.

The 165s are only 2.85 metres wide.
They are longer than the A stock but their 0.05 metre less width means their throw on the gently curve in the tunnels between Finchley Road & Baker Street will not result in “rather bent bodywork”...unless the 150 daily trips the A stock made for 35 years “down the Met tunnel” resulted in their bodywork twisting & turning on every trip without London Underground knowing!

Posters have given other convincing reasons for the 165s not working to Baker Street but “bent bodywork” is not one of them.

The length of the coach / car makes a big difference. A stock was 16.2 m. A 165 Driving car is 23.5m. End throw and centre throw will be much more substantial, even though narrower.

As an aside, does the rollout of CBTC completely preclude future heritage operations on the sub-surface railway? Obviously there are still going to be "lights on sticks" between Harrow and Amersham for Chiltern, but what about Harrow to Baker Street?
I believe so we (kent & east sussex railway) sent one of our metropolitan coaches to the last steam on the met event which was just before CBTC and we have LUs running Metropolitan Coach on loan.

Why West Ealing wasn't chosen as a Temporary Terminal for Chiltern that day?
Quite a few reasons make it a non-starter. Route knowledge for the drivers, availability of guards, single line occupancy between South Ruislip and Greenford West Junction, occupancy of the double line between Greenford and West Ealing.

As per my earlier post, only some Aylesbury drivers sign West Ealing. None of the drivers at the other depots do. Plus there is the long, slow section of single line from South Ruislip to Greenford, the fact there's just one bay platform at West Ealing, oh and it's not DOO cleared so you would need one of the handful of guard-trained Aylesbury RPIs. It's a complete non-starter and passengers would have been far better served simply changing for the Central line at West/South Ruislip.
