Manchester Piccadilly

Anybody know what the wires/tracks are for at the rear of Piccadilly station, running parallel to Store Street? I realise Piccadilly is a terminus and that an amount of track is required for the vehicles to reverse, but this length of track is a few hundred yards, far more than is required just to reverse vehicles.

Are they intended to be the start of a new route?

I take it you mean Manchester Piccadilly. Then those tracks are the start of the new extension to Droylsden and Ashton-under-Lyne.

Piccadilly station will become a through station for some services while others will continue to terminate there. A central reversing line has been provided just beyond the undercroft.

If you look more closely you'll find the track extends for almost 6 miles...

It is probably for flexibility. If you can imagine that there is something going on in Manchester or towards Eccles, Altrincham or Bury, the ability to launch trams at Man Picc in quick succession will be appreciated. Can the trams be run in 4 tram formations for ECS workings?

Are there any available line plans of the Metrolink lines and storage lines that now will eventuallly pass through the undercroft of Manchester Piccadilly railway station that can be given a link onto this thread ?

The middle track is the turnback loop.... the two tracks either side of it will be the running roads for the new East Manchester Line, out to the Etihad Stadium, Droylesden and eventually Ashton. The new line is effectively an extension of the tracks from Piccadilly Gardens to Piccadilly Station, which will soon run right through.
