Hi,

I have applied to be an operations manager with Merseyrail in Liverpool.

My current PRIV is a TOCNE standard staff card for the Arriva Group, and gets me the 25% rate std class tickets.

An operation manager is a higher rank than station supervisor, (current). Does anyone know whether I may be given a 'silver' priv?

Thanks.

Certainly won't get a 'silver' priv as IIRC they are reserved for executive level staff, you may depending on the level of management raise your current TOCNE priv to 1st class but apart from that not much is likely to change.

hi thanks for responses. contacted HR today, i get a 1st class priv that gets me 75% discount on National Rail 1st and STD fares.

I also get a free Merseyrail travel...

There isn't any FC atm on Merseyrail, but is supposed to be changing with the new fleet in 2012-2013... (Southport-Hunts Cross line).

You can still get a First Class Priv even if your company has no First Class!
Hmm. What's to stop Merseyrail from issuing FC privs to loads of staff, on the basis it won't affect Merseyrail at all?

The agreement that all TOCs sign up to with ATOC that they will only issue FC privs to those managers above level MS4 IIRC.

The thing is, staff travel is all administered by a separate company (whether or not they be a branch of ATOC we shall probably never know) called Rail Staff Travel Limited.

The facilities are regulated and everything has to be agreed between TOCs (or their representatives in RST) before passes are issued. I.e. in the case above all other TOCs would have to agree to take Merseyrail FC passes and TOCs are well within their rights to refuse. Sort of like working for Sainsburys and expecting a discount in Tesco (or maybe not depending how you look at it).

Even on SC privs, not everyone played happy families and to this day it says 'Not valid on London Underground Limited or Strathclyde PTE services' on the card itself. Again, say SWT and EMT pulled out, it wouldn't be too hard to put wording on the card to this effect.

Thinking about it though, if any TOC was to pull out then it will have bad effect on the whole concept of RST. A company would be unlikely to pull out because of wanting its employees to be accepted on others' services. It would also be unlikely they made a blanket ban on FC passes, say, as they know then that other companies would not accept their passes either. Before long, another company will say well ok we'll stop accepting them too and before you know it nothing's accepted by anyone...

Rail Staff Travel Limited (RSTL) was established at the Privatisation of British Rail to deal with individuals who had their travel facilities safeguarded at that time. In addition RSTL administers the non-contractual travel facilities granted to employees who have joined the Train Operating Companies since 1 April 1996 (known as TOC New Entrants). The Rail Staff Travel Ltd is handled by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC).

So basically RSTL is a seperate company but is run under the blanket of ATOC (a little like RSP Ltd)

Just for reference, MS4 and above is when you become eligable for a status pass as it's known, even then, each company has a set number to give out, so not everyone may get one who is elligable.
