Can anyone point me in the right direction of a route map of main-line railways in Mallorca please? (I have done the Palma-Soller tourist route).

Are there any destinations on lines out of Palma that make for a good day out?

Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't say there is a main line, their two lines are like heritage railways. Palma to Soller is a must do though.

There is a small Metro style train for a few miles around Palma

IMO there is definitely a 'main line' railway (albeit metre gauge) in the shape of the Palma - Inca - Sa Pobla/Manacor railway.

This railway has come back from the brink of extinction so is worth a ride for that fact alone. Inca is worth a visit. The railway has been modernised and re-extended in recent years having been dying and cut back to Palma - Inca only at one time.

The changes have been massive even since I visited in 2005, and certainly since my uncle visited in the 1950s when it was steam and 3ft 6 gauge!

This railway is not like a heritage railway and is mainly used by commuters and locals AFAIK - unlike the Soller railway which carries heavy tourist traffic, but even that is not really like a British heritage railway in the true sense of the word, never having closed and still operating services exactly as it did when first built.

Decent round up on wikipedia except that the outer diesel routes are described as electrified:

I travelled on the 'main line' last August, as well as the Metro in Palma. I'm doing Soller this Summer. The line is electrified from Palma to Enllac/Empalme, which is the station after Inca. Until this point, the line has quite a modern feel, Palma Intermodal being quite a new build station. You'll need to leave the train here and transfer onto a small DMU which will be waiting in the other platform, or just arriving. An announcement is made in English on the approach to Enllac.
From Enllac to Sa Pobla/La Puebla and Manacor, it has quite a rural feel, with many small towns and villages en route. However, the air conditioning is rather diminished on these little trains, and they are less comfortable, as well as being quite graffitied. Sa Pobla didn't seem to have much of interest, but Manacor appeared to be much more substantial.
Fares are quite reasonable, I remember it being about no more than Five Euros for a Palma-Inca single, and a Inca-Sa Pobla return was 4.15 euros. Ticket gates are in operation at most larger stations, eg Palma, Inca, Manacor, as well as the inner city stations up until about Marratxi as far as I can remember. The tickets resemble receipts, and you scan the barcode on them.

Now, onto the Metro. There are two Metro lines, one from Palma to UIB, and one from Palma to Marratxi. These trains are 2 cars in length, and tend to be quiet outside of University term time, and the UIB line, which I used, is generally underground until the second to last station where it comes into daylight. Fares are quite reasonable, a Palma-UIB return was 3.10 euros.

Service frequencies drop in Summer holiday times, such as when I visited in August. The Mainline sees one 2tph Palma-Inca, with 1tph connecting to Sa Pobla, and one to Manacor. These services call at all stations, as Metro line 2 [Marraxti] doesn't run during the Summer and so the mainline trains call at these stations to compensate.

The Metro line 1 has a sparse service of 1 train per 90 minutes, with some extras giving a 30 min gap at times. I made the mistake of leaving the train at UIB and it left without me, and there is nothing at UIB station, with it being the University station, and nothing around it, so be prepared for a dull hour and a half if the train leaves without you.

Overall, the lines are interesting, but the Metro is nothing fantastic, it's worth a look at, as due to the sparse service, there are lots of sets left in the Intermodal station, some in quite bad condition considering their age, just about 8 years. The station itself does seem too large considering the intervals in the summer, and it's all underground. It connects onto a large bus station, too.

There are also some series 91 units for the intended extension to Arta from Manacor in the station, I'm not sure if it has gone ahead as intended though.

Hope this helps!

Hello, I only registered on this forum today and it was a surprise to find this thread as it turns out I am from Mallorca!

The previous messages summarise very well the status of the train network in Mallorca, however I think it should be noticed that Mallorca used to have far more lines in operation around a century ago, before cars became popular and Mallorca having one of the highest rates of cars per person in the world, with nearly 2 cars per person, so a lot of those lines were closed. Here is a map showing the Mallorca rail network at its best:

Also, the extension from Manacor to Artà was declined and they now decided to use the old rail track for a "green way" for pedestrians and ciclists. Not a great idea, in my opinion, as I am sure it would have been a wise extension benefiting both residents and tourists staying in the eastern part of the island.

The underground line M1 to the University of the Balearic Islands was not planned well, in my opinion. They did not look at the busiest bus lines of the capital and decided upon passenger numbers, otherwise they would have prioritised another route which covered more urban areas. This line stops at 3/4 stations which are residential and handy if you are travelling to central Palma, then it goes through an industrial area (3 more stations), then a small neighbourhood in the outskirts of Palma and then the UIB. There are plans to extend the line towards a business park about a kilometre away from the university, which will benefit people working there.

There were also plans for a second underground line which I have never heard of again after the change in government (from conservatives to socialist and back to conservatives again now). There is a video here (a much more useful line, in my opinion): http://youtu.be/YCsABQhiDpg

There were also plans in the pipeline to build a tram along Palma bay, extending from the airport and el Arenal in the east, crossing central Palma, and west past Magaluf. However, nothing else has been heard about this after the government changed and following the austerity measures. More information on this video: http://youtu.be/VbJMlKjQOOI

I hope this helps. Anything else, just ask me, I'm more than happy to help!
