Macs vs Windows

I Don't mind mac's at all but what puts me off them is the cost which is to me most important as i can build a very decent pc for a price of most pre-built macs.

Also the one thing i hate for macs is a majority of users, due to them looking down at Windows or even Linux users, for some reason or other. But my overal view of apple isn't that great due to every one following and blindly going after their latest products. Such as the Ipad & Ipad 2 which were really only released very little time between them

I do prefer Windows for a lot of reasons, one being all my software i have supports it, it is very securied and safe if you use a decent enough firewall & anti virus software and again the cost, as it isn't overpriced.

A lot of people seem to have commented on the price of a Mac over a PC.
I must admit they do seem overpriced but I have to say the build quality is a cut above.
I currently have a 15" MacBook Pro which cost me around a grand. But the build quality and general feel of the machine is much better than any previous laptop I have had. My last windows laptop before this was a Sony Viao and after about 6 months of use it was feeling very tired.
I guess once again it is down to personal preference and if you feel the extra cost is worth it. Personally I do, but I guess many wouldn't

They're both good, I prefer Windows 7 for its common sense approach to file management. I'm not too keen on OSX, it's more like "my first operating system", I do like the keyboards though.

I've always found the opposite to be true for filesystems. I prefer the idea of the Unix-based filesystems mainly because of GNU coreutils allowing easier command-line management as well as putting everything under / instead of C:\ , D:\ and is case sensitivity really that hard? "Folder" and "folder" are not one and the same - except to windows. NTFS is also a relatively poor system itself, no journal and becomes far more fragmented than ext4 (unsure about mac fs)

Agreed although I think it would apply less to laptops.

Fanyboys are a problem across every bit of technology unfortunately although whether it's due to Apple's press coverage their fanboys do seem to be worse. Couldn't agree more on their wacky release schedule. Hasn't it only been around 12 months since the ipad was released, if that? Something tells me Apple could have put WiFi and multitasking into the original iPad but chose not to in order so that they could sell the sequel (planned obsolescence) I've noticed it across all their devices though

A laptop is different to a desktop and although I wouldn't consider buying a mac myself I can understand those people that do. From what I've seen and read they're more reliable and last longer than a windows laptop as well as looking a lot better OOTB. Is it true that virtually any decent software costs extra on top though?

Apple have a track record of updating stuff every year or so. Seen it with iphones and now ipad. I have an ipad but wouldn't buy a ipad2 as it just doesn't offer me value for money. I would guess ipad3 will be out next year !

Software for a mac can be a mixed bag but generally not too pricey. I think a mac comes with more software preloaded than your average PC purchase though.
You can usually get decent software at a reasonable price.

I know that normal Windows laptops can go to obbesive pricing, I was making the comparasion more to the desktop systems, as for macs a majority of the parts are incredibly overpriced what i can't understand.

Fanboys yes you get them everywhere, but due to my main intrest being computers i come across them a lot as well as Intel & Nvidia fanboys who instantly think your 'stupid' or something on the line with that if you go AMD/ATI.

Software based you seem to get a lot more as standard on Macs compared to Windows but you can get a lot of freesoftware right up to fantastic stuff such as Sony Vegas studio.

I've had serval friends start from the orginal iphone right up to iphone 4 and got them as soon as they came out :/ The ipods i have to admit were good and i would have considered one but now i will just stick to Creative.

As well as my laptop, in my bedroom I have an XP desktop which feels better than ever (maybe because I've recently installed OpenTTD on it?), and that hasn't even connected to the Internet for some time. It was formerly the family computer, before it became effectively mine about halfway through its current lifespan. Its statistics are quite poor by modern standards (even after an upgrade!), but you know what? I don't care! And you know how old it is? As of yesterday, 25/04/2011, it has been in use for 9½ years. We got it the day XP became available in the shops.

I've never known a Mac to last that long. We even had an old 3.1 until about five years ago, which we passed over to my brother's friend so he could build his own computer. (We received it for free when our old primary school were having a clear-out.)

For the record, even after an upgrade the XP machine has a 900MHz processor, 512MB of RAM and 40GB of HD space. It works without a sweat - even when I try to run the 1.4GHz -requiring TRS2004 on it.

I have a small Samsung laptop for my work and a Compaq Prescario for home use, which I use to run Railworks and Trainz. The only Trainz I ever purchased is 2004, but I bought Railworks a few weeks ago and have since left Trainz it in it's box, crying for attention!

It is said that the best computers for gaming are made by Alien Ware. I've seen the spec for their latest desktop and as you will see if you go on their site, it's seriously good quality.

Nonetheless, I get 3027MB of RAM, 2.0Ghz and AMD M880G with Radeon 4200 from my Prescario, which is more than enough to keep Railworks, Assasins Creed and UK Truck Simulator running on decent spec.
