My colleague recently lost an unregistered Oyster card. I informed him that that's just like losing cash, once it's gone it's gone.

Am I correct in that assumption. If he could find the number of the card could the balance (about £15) be refunded? Could the card be blocked to stop another person using it? I suspect that he's onto a hiding to nothing, but I said I'd ask.

With the card number you should be able to register the oyster online. This will let you report it as lost and/or request a refund, which blocks the card from that point (well I think buses can take up to 15 minutes(?) to get the updated block list)

Alternatively the balance can be transferred to another Oyster, which you have to buy for £10 unless you already have another one.
