Just come off the 1410 service from Trent Valley to Birmingham at Rugeley Town and as I was getting ready to film the turbo leaving, I saw a thick plume of white smoke coming from in/around the engine area of the second carriage. When it then left, it usually leaves with two plumes of black smoke but only the front car gave out, meaning one plume of black smoke

A possible problem with the engine department?

Could it be that the driver of 170505 was only using the one engine to be environmentally friendly?

I don't think 170s have eco-drive so I wouldn't have thought so. And seeing as they're underpowered anyway I wouldn't have thought the driver would give themselves less power deliberately.

Who cares, It's got Sunday off to recover anyway!!!!!!!
Ha ha, but seriously all DMMUs vent oil at random times, I recall 156s being the worst, it's a bluey smoke with the a strong smell. Think it's from transmission, but don't take that as gospel.

Sounds like the diesel fired auxiliary heater kicking out a bit of smoke. It happens from time to time with Pacers and Sprinters too which have the 'Webasto' mounted below the solebar towards the cab end of the vehicle. It's not a major problem and if it gets very bad the burner can be isolated easily. It won't normally cause an engine to remain or revert to idle.

170516 is the one in the carriage sidings at Wolves, nothing wrong with it though, it's there as part of the current London Midland service alterations. It's off out to play in the morning.

This is most likely the reason for the smoke.
