London Bridge

Good morning everyone

Are there any restrictions on London Bridge Station for anybody to sit on the end of the platform all day to watch the trains (im planning on catching the 6:37 to London from Newport)?

I know I'll need a ticket so would a platform ticked suffice or just a cheap return to London Thameslink (£1.85)?

Thanks in advance

Consider getting a one day Travelcard as your ticket then you can come and go as you please rather than just a return to Paddington .

I reply not just as an enthusiast but also as a railway employee (LUL not the national network).
I spent quite a lot of time during 2024/2025 at London Bridge, and for the most part did not encounter any issues. However, there were one or two Security individuals who could be slightly more "jobsworth" than others and would regularly move people along even if you were seemingly doing no harm.

Towards my last handfuls of visits I was asked by a couple of the more reasonable staff to sign in at the Network Rail customer service desk. This is becoming more common at many large stations and is actually understandable. Rather than turning you away it means you are "accounted for" and everyone knows what you're doing. All staff are trained to be vigilant of customers who do not seem to be boarding any train, and will approach to check on your welfare and to see what you are doing - and it means you're discounted as being a security risk.

For the most part, the "high level" platforms at London Bridge you will pretty much blend into the crowds anyway. The "low level" platforms are quieter, and I often used to stand at the southern end of platforms 11/12 so I could see arrivals at the low level as well as most of what was arriving on the high level. This does mean you tend to stick out like a sore thumb (a sole figure at the "wrong" end of a busy station platform) but if you have signed in and have a ticket and permission and do not put yourself in danger or be a nuisance then all should be ok.

Go to the Network Rail station office, explain you would like to go on the platforms to watch trains and they will sign you in and give you a pass which will allow you on to all platforms.

Thank you all for the replies, I am myself Network rail staff but haven't done much around the London area since I was a kid with my dad lol. I will certainly go to the desk and ask.

Incidentally, where would be the best place to stand to watch everything in and out-I haven't been there since they developed (well I didn't know they had)

On the low level southern platforms, as close to the higher level platforms (platform 8 I think ) you then clearly see all units arriving/departing.

And a very nice one it is too.

Is it still free to play?
Off-topic, but I'm curious about your forum name - as another member (in this thread) has 800001, did you choose 800002 as the next one up or was there a specific reason to choose it? Only idle curiosity. We could be on the way to a fleet!

So long as London Bridge keeps the organ it'll be my favourite station easily. I remember when St Pancras introduced public pianos which felt like a real novelty at the time, now it's not uncommon to find pianos in public spaces.

Sounds like a suitable place for a rousing rendering of the Seekers version of “This train am bound for glory”
