Yet it worked everywhere in London... so the data on the magnetic stripe was fine...

I've done the Grand Union starting at Watford Junction too. It's only 0.5 km (1/3 mile) extra really, by the time you join up to the same bridge.

Having done this today... it's actually 1.93km ( 1.20 miles )... extra from Watford Junction to Watford Met ( didn't have a choice because the Met was closed for engineering works... ).

We also discovered that the signposting in Watford is, quite frankly, awful and virtually useless - there's hardly any of it...

The distance between the stations is a different concept to that which you quoted, which was to compare the relative difference between using the stations to get to/from the route.

Walking between these stations must be an incredibly niche thing; for example, from the north you can get a direct bus from Rickmansworth Station to Watford Junction station. From the south, there are numerous alternatives.

Ah... yes... having now looked again... although I did make clear in my original posts that we were looking to walk that specific section of the canal; had we gone to the more northern bridge we'd have then had a much longer walk on the next section ( Watford to Denham ) that would be a long way over our normal 8 mile maximum for a day - something close to 10 miles.

The wayfinding signage in Watford is terrible, really terrible, and always has been.

Hope you enjoyed the walk, it’s a nice stretch of canal, and had a pint at the Paper Mill in Apsley. I used to have a flat in the block next to it, still miss the view of that marina.
