Locking First bus doors

I've always wondered how do they lock the doors? surely when it is parked in a stabling bay ect there must be some kind of locking on the doors somewhere or may find theres no bus the next morning!

Ive noticed at Bath they just push the door open button, which ive seen a drunken plonker do.

Well - First (Bath) don't lock up to my knowledge when parked up in the "private road" at Bath Bus station but don't know about the outstations.

As far as I know, you can't lock a bus. However, some of these new buses, despite being able to get into them easily, its difficult to hotwire them so pretty sure stealing a bus would be difficult.

Many modern buses are fitted with keys, certainly the Scanias and Solos I've seen have them.

Buses - the vast majority anyway - have a battery isolation switch (as do 159's etc). The one's that are taken are usually knicked by ex-disgruntled employees who know where the switch is.

I don't know about the modern stuff but most of them like VR's etc you just switch the battery back in and hit the start button. On the Routemasters we used to pull out an Aran switch in the cab then pull the starter which is in the form of a small hook above the head on the left.

Refurbished versions were fitted with a special electric key system but apparently you could bypass it with a screwdriver.

I bought it from Steve Bunda - the Membership Secretary of the Routemaster Owners & Operators Association.

Steve had just bought RMC4 The 1st London Country Routemaster and needed the space. The lucky bugger now has RMA1 too the first Airport Routemaster.

I believe that he lives not far from your area so you just might see them around.

Cool, owning an RM...but then flogging it?

Owning one is an ideal - but storage and maintenance is a nightmare. I kept it in Shamrock Buses yard in Poole but could only get to it when their buses went out on the school contracts between 8am - 10am and 2.30pm - 4.30pm.
That was only a temporary arrangement too.

I did buy with the idea of lettting people have the chance to drive a 'Genuine London Bus' as nobody else offers this but I would have needed an old airfield or something similair.

Besides although I like buses and loved driving RM's in London, I'm not keen on driving halfway up the country at a very noisy 35ish mph to stand round all day at a bus rally.

I'd rather volunteer for a steam railway somewhere which I'm thinking of at the mo' - maybe the Watercress Line or Swanage.
