LNER Intercity 225

I’m travelling to Leeds in a couple of weeks. Is there a way of finding out which type of traction LNER will be using? I haven’t booked anything yet, but I’d prefer to travel on the 225 rather than the Azuma. I will be travelling on either a Monday or a Tuesday.

Without looking at diagrams, you can see what is likely planned from RealTimeTrains. If you select the detailed view, than look at a train, if it is planned as a 225, it will be pathed as 'Electric locomotive', whereas an Azuma is pathed Class 80X.

See this example, which is planned as a 225.

Pathed as Electric locomotive, trailing load 410 tonnes
Planned for 125mph max

The 10:33 from kgx is a 225, the following 2 services are booked 80x.

No problem info is sourced through realtimetrains.co.uk so as usual set swaps may occur.

Just a word of caution that a timing load, as shown in realtime data sites, doesn't inherently indicate planed traction, however in the case of LNER, the timing loads do generally match up what is planned.

When you do book, if you book either with us (for any train company) or with LNER (for travel with LNER), you would be able to choose your seat (subject to the facility being available).

A seat selector facility is another way to see the planned traction, as the seating layouts are very different, as well as differences in coach lettering.

However, changes can happen, so if you want to be sure of getting a 225 you'd need to be using a flexible ticket, and be prepared to change your travel plans in case of any set swaps on the day.
