LNER 5 minute reservation… how does it know?!

I suppose it begs the question of how would it work, would it be reliant on someone uploading them periodically or should there be some form of automatic refresh?

This day in age, regular refreshes at stations shouldn’t be too challenging.

FWIW, I commute on the East Coast and am often on LNER services. I can count on one hand the number of times I've been turfed out of a 'orange' seat because someone has reserved it. And it's not something I see happening often to others.

It is annoying and I agree with that it's a stupid system when the reservations don't update in real time, but in practice it's not a considerable problem.

Reservations made after a train has started its journey, should be banned, period.

So, for example, someone travelling from Newcastle to Edinburgh should not be allowed to reserve a seat after the train has left Kings Cross? I agree they should not be able to reserve a seat that someone is already occupying unreserved, but why not a seat that is currently empty or that is reserved from London to (for example) York?

If the system is reliably able to feed back (from the train in real time) which seats are/aren’t occupied then it could be viable, but can that actually be achieved?

The Pendolino is supposed to do this but it doesn't seem to work well (or at all) at the moment.
