Hi Guys,

Change of plan on Tuesday. I will now be travelling from Liverpool up to Leeds, arriving before 1pm. I'll then continue after 2:30pm on to Wigan before catching the last train of the night back to Liverpool.

Any ideas on tickets please?

I don't have to travel via Wigan on the outward journey, but will do so if it makes things cheaper.

Much love

I don't think it matters that you wish to return via Wigan, as a Liverpool to Manchester is valid via Wigan on map ML, see http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/RSPDocuments/permitted_route_identifier.pdf and http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/RSPDocuments/maps.pdf the guard may think it's an odd route, but it is valid!

Manchester-Leeds can be done a bit cheaper with a Rte Hebden Bridge ticket, but this is slower.

A few quid can be saved by splitting at Littleborough instead of Manchester (in fact, a few pence more can be saved by splitting at Littleborough and Walsden but less trains call at Walsden so I wouldn't recommend it)

Hmm, Liverpool to Leeds is permitted via Manchester, Liverpool to Manchester is permitted via Wigan, logic would suggest Leeds > Manchester > Wigan > Liverpool is a valid route but that is logic and this is the railways :lol:

I just gave the cheapest options. But for Liverpool - Leeds routeings, check the RG, if you get stuck, we're here to help :)

Edit: Yes it's valid, see the attachment.

I think you can split at St Helens Junction.
at least you can take the fast Northern service to Manchester on the outward.

It looks ok to me, as follows;
For St Helens Jn to Leeds, Huyton passes the fares check (for SDS any permitted fares), so can be used as a routeing point.

Huyton to Leeds is allowed on maps ML + TP
Map ML allows Huyton - Wigan - Manchester, and TP for Manchester - Leeds

Which makes St Helens Jn - Huyton - Wigan - Manchester - Leeds a valid route.
So, on the return, you would travel as far as Huyton on your Leeds - St Helens Jn ticket, and from Huyton to Liverpool on the St Helens Jn - Liverpool ticket.

(splitting at St Helens Central also covers the route, but you would need to get a train that stops at Huyton on the outward, which rules out the fast Northern service).
