Ive noticed that looking at the actual schedual of it gives a date of the 2nd and looking at a full timetable gets a date of 3rd
It sets off from Liverpool at 20.55 on Wednesday 2nd, getting to Lincoln at 08.44 on the 3rd.

Overnight trains on RTT always give the data as the date of departure, even if a train is booked
to depart from its origin location at 23.59!

First train is booked to arrive next Thursday (September 3rd):

(the schedule for the loaded return working is not in RTT yet)

Does it really spend more than two hours running to Barnetby and back just to run round?

Seems crazy but the station loops are very short and Holmes don't appear to be signalled to allow it.

If it is longer than the station loops, the train will need to be split to use the sidings anyway.

It cant do Holmes because of the immense amount of passenger trains.

Daft question, but why does it go through Lincoln, reverse at Barnetby, come back to Lincoln and reverse again? Why not just run straight into the sidings?

What service passes it at Newark Castle? Does something run wrong line to overtake it?

Terrace Siding 1 which it will load from doesn’t have a run round loop so it has to reverse in.

Running round at Lincoln would waste time and use a platform for at least part of the manoeuvre.

The passing train statement is likely an error.

I see. Would it not be more cost effective to base a shunter there to drag it in from the station?
Even if that's not viable, I don't see how running round at Lincoln can waste more time than trundling 40 minutes north to do it there and trundle back? Yes it would occupy a platform but Lincoln isn't *that* busy.

Last time this flow ran, the train length was too long for a run round at Lincoln, which also meant it needed splitting onto two sidings within the terminal. A shunt loco wouldn't really help, plus it would be expensive to hire one and provide a driver for it, especially if the flow only runs once a week or so like it used to. In theory the train could be split into two portions in the station to avoid the run to Barnetby and back, but even if the signalling allows that, it would be an awkward set of manoeuvres that couldn't realistically be done at a time of day when passenger trains were running.

The caption to this 2007 picture describes how the train used to arrive at Lincoln from the Barnetby direction and needed to draw forward across High Street level crossing before it could propel into the terminal (or in this case, not make it that far!):

This 2015 picture shows the train in Terrace sidings, with the wagons split over two sidings:

There's a sign for EMR visible in that picture, but looking on Google Maps, the actual EMR scrapyard is located about 1.5 miles away, adjacent to the curve from Boultham Jn to Pyewipe Jn. Presumably the scrap was brought across from there by lorry before being loaded to the wagons?

I think the last scrap train from Terrace sidings ran in March 2020.

Also found these interesting photos which make the location of Terrace Sidings (at the east end of Lincoln station) a bit clearer for anyone wondering:

This 2006 photo shows a very unusual move into Terrace sidings with 60052 propelling unit 153366 (!):

While this lovely 1985 shot from the same position shows the location of Terrace sidings in relation to the line to Barnetby (left) / Sleaford (right) and the old DMU depot:

Makes an interesting comparison with the 2015 photo - the EMR loading siding in its current state looks a lot less overgrown than it did then.
It looks like they did an awful lot of work to just end up running it one time, you cant really tell in my pictures but all that track had to be replaced, and im pretty sure its also a new fence there

The siding has also been used, since their introduction in 2019, for the Azumas to lay over between turns.

The lines the azumas use, are different lines, I mean the scrap line has been re-layed, the line the azumas go on are the 2 on the left while the scrap train is one on the right

A friend at DB suggests this is the only time its running this week. Hopefully, following the chaos it caused today, as mentioned above, they have learnt their lesson on train lengths.

I didnt really mean this week, i meant in general, if there is more they will run another scrap train in a week or 2 i would say or wait until theres enough to fill a full train, of hopefully not too many wagons
