Lewes derailment - speculation regarding potential causes, exact temperature, ground conditions etc

Not sure if it would be relevant or not, but the track their is fairly close to the River Ouse - is that tidal up to that point? If it is then the twice daily fluctuations in local soil moisture could also exacerbate matters.
The Sussex Ouse is tidal up to Barcombe Mills.

The Arun is tidal all the way up to Pulborough.

Thanks both, I had a recollection that it was tidal up to Lewes but didn't know how far beyond. (And yes, I did mean "there" not "their" doh!)
