I use a lot of odds and sods for modelling, stuff easy to collect as well, I have had cheap little models, which had no glass for the windows, and all I do is use the plastic from supermarket bought bacon and cut it, well I wash it first. You. Can see that in the little graveyard scene.

In my church graveyard I have collected moss from out in the garden it spreads up on to the concrete so easy to tear off and dry, they say you should preserve it I never have and it is still good,close up that little plant photographs well

Those dogs are excellent - I'd never have thought of making them like that. To echo @Cowley - they're very cute indeed.

At the time I was repainting people to look like real people and I did one of a friend and they had a dog and there was no dog that looked close to paint and I just thought,what the hell maybe I can make one...so I trialled the wire like I made a tree and made a dog instead,I ended posting one which was lost made a replacement,and a fellow modeller came over to England from canada and a bunch of us met up and I handed over the dog,he was chuffed,


behind out of focus is the picture sent to me to paint her, I send latex to lengthen the hair,latex is useful as if you make a mistake you can rub it off.
I use grated insulation for snow you can brush it off later when it finally turns yellow and it has static properties so stick to buildings without glue, you just grate it from above and it falls like snow and then with a small brush remove excess from people, do not hoover it up with people on the layout or you will be in the bin bag looking for missing model parts lol been there done that got the t shirt


we were nervous about the static and fine particles near the trains, we only used this on scenic parts,the thought of this getting in a working train and messing it up was too nerve wracking.

I like plastercine as well it lends itself to all sorts architectural parts missing from Goathland station

to make the little stones at the base of the walls


noW I used about to dry modelling kit, but plastercine lends itself well to a neat little add to your scene,and a knife makes the ties at the top

now the bunny is metal but looking at it here it could be plastercine,I used to see in fron of the telly trialling all sorts of little bits of kit. If this ideas do not work no big outlay and if they work savings in outlay and personal satisfaction in one offs,these bin bags dumped in a lay-by, by if you have a modern bin collector lorry these will look great and use an anamel paint for the shinier look.

This is inspiring stuff. I’ll be collecting birch seeds later in the year!

As they come to mind I will pop up any cheapie ideas people can try,these things often inspire people to have a go,and add detail especially if a free product.

I really must pay a visit to the place when we’re allowed to again. I still haven’t travelled on the line but I did visit the area once and it was very beautiful.

We usually model a 1960s Heartbeat version,but of course the line was closed,the footbridge was bought in from another closed station,and we do a modern day preservation version,it allows us to get a way with blue murder
Then we also occasionally pop out the Harry Potter kit.As a holiday destination it is quite easy to get4 photographs and informatiom, I have also occasionally engaged with actual workers for the line which opens up all their gala events,they have WW1 WW2 events and loads of other items worth staging.The Dads Army stuff got so prolific it ended up with its own scenic area....and do not get me started on planes ands and helicopters lol. FYI we also intentend a Blackpool area with the pier and the trams

I'm liking that @Jaz avalley - the detail on show is really cool. Lots of people in the model railway community seem to think that using pre-made buildings on layouts doesn't make you a 'proper' modeller but this goes to show that just isn't the case.

The problem is that with a large layout the population of buildings would take forever, being able to buy groups of similar buildings re made is what gives me the time to sort the scenery,many fine modellers have built their buildings but then other aspects get less attention, time is always the killer, some people cut up and makeover the resin buildings but I know that a building in good condition with a good box can pull good prices so I cynically try not to ruin that, I will be modelling real buildings that are not pre made,years ago I had a look at the concept with a pub,I tried to see what I could get away with by just painting,or minimal cost of plastic realising the likes of Evergreen gave better more flexible options,I tried modelling clay roof,but the weight needed a strong support system, a friend mentioned weetabix but actually if you have no mice liking to take up residence it might be a good idea, I have bought master kits, and even scratch built,but the thinking,the planning,the space takes up more room,and I have a lot of non modelling work to fit in...that said some examples

wheetabix, seriously I was discussing something that looked right and it was suggested,much light cardboard frame had serious potential until it attracted mice...so abandonded

this photo so close throws up all the glaring inadequacies but at a distance it gets away with blue murder, I did upgrade a window, cutting plastic


weight bearing was the fun issue, a Wills kit was much more straight forward

adapting a Wills kit for a real building much easier, scoring the brick work, adding burglar alarm simple,although someone said the windows were plain and I designed an upgrade,

I made a joke about my work being toilet,so built an outhouse to prove it lol,never did add the guttering!


the corner join is appalling,the police house had 45 degree joins,I only have the frontage I should make it a low relief but I wanted the back never managed to get a picture so I could bluff it but it was on Heartbeat and I wanted it just so. resin especially the better ones is just so much easier

I completely agree with you about pre-made buildings allowing for more time for scenery on the layout. That use of Weetabix for a thatched roof is brilliant - I would never have thought of that.
That outhouse is really cool as well: as is the scenery around it.

I do love modelling, but the invest in time for me is hard,I have livestock to look after and babies coming through,chickens,ducks,and goats,and just as farmers need to watch out for crow attacks on sheep and lambs a nasty trick those birds have learnt over the last few decades so I too need to watch my goats a local church means a lot of crows,with horses nearby there are magpies who still eggs and chicks and ducklings,but crows are vicious they will attack a pregnant sheep and go after the lamb in the womb,or eat the eyes and take the tongue from lambs being born, such vigilance keeps me outside,bird flu rules have relaxed by I am still keeping my birds under net and wire until crops are more attractive than my livestock,usually I like to reflect on real life in my modelling but I prefer a more ideal if view than a stark reality

A bit like you I struggle to find the time to do stuff. I had a day off yesterday and managed to get all of my weekend jobs done though so I’m going to have a go at getting my level crossing done in a minute.

Those scenes look lovely. There's a real sense of depth and realism to them.
Like @Cowley and yourself, I've found that time is the largest issue when it comes to model railways (that, and money... ): I have plenty of things to be doing but I keep finding other things which also need finishing. An awful lot of things in model railways are compromises: not everything's going to be perfect, but we can try our best and then we get something pretty close.

the real red arrows, you can see the nato figure is a good. Arch I just painted white the note holders they have on their thighs, I had a friend an ex plot who helped me size the helicopter pad and the correct landing requirements minimum

That looks like a decent bit of work you've done there - the glue for the windows is something I'd thought about but hadn't had a go at. I might try it with my own RailRoad 08.

To get the out thickness then the in lines I found I ended up with a round effect,I did consider trying elsewhere with a vertical or horizontal gluing and see if it looks different ‘ better, I. Would be interested to see you attempt and thoughts on it.


I have also weathered various sets of wagons, I find Paul Bartlett’s photo collection a good resource for reference
although I found this picture here that made me colour these which are non typical but I did a decent job and left them

part way into weathering,fresh yellow paint

the front right, before weathering and madder changes with the old clunky couplings,but loads of good moulding detail

the plain smooth plastic interior can be improved - real coal - a full load would disguise any lacking detail
my personal favourite paint job will need to be added another day ran out of photos lol

I'll definitely have a go at doing that method on something - probably the old Lima 47 I've got before the RailRoad 08. Those wagons look really cool - they look very worn-down. Lovely

this is my favourite weathering, because it is the most successful

fine weathering powders were the final touches DCC Concepts rusts and black really gave the dirty coal killing any shine successfully I have never added a finishing spray and I have yet to notice any appreciable wear and tear

That wagon does look very nice. Can just imagine a rake of those rolling along behind a 56 (?) or something, on the way to a power station somewhere...
(I think that's what they were used for - I've probably got that all wrong)
