Kit Built Semaphore Signals

G'day everyone,

I'm curious to know whether anyone has built semaphore signals for OO gauge / 4mm model railways, either to Midland Railway or LMS design. I've built a couple of Ratio plastic kits and whilst they make a nice model they are rather flimsy (bear in mind that we have two marauding cats and a enthusiastic Grand son). Having built two sets of points my soldering skills aren't too shabby so that certainly won't be a barrier. If possible I'd also like the "arm" to bounce when set at danger, just like the real thing! I've not made up my mind whether to have the signals motorized or use the wire in a tube method.

Thoughts / ideas anyone?

If you want "bounce" then you'll need some electronics. You can look at the Peco product or visit the MERG site.

You need to look on rmweb. Quite a lot of people doing that. Try model signal engineering website for etched brass components.

Model Signal Engineering are at the CMRA Model Railway Show at the Alban Arena this weekend, I believe, if you want an opportunity to see something of their range. I have built one LMS signal from MSE parts, but the modelling has rather taken a back seat while I mess around with the full-size stuff at St Albans South box.

I had previously built a Ratio signal for a small layout for the box, but it rapidly suffered damage. The Ratio signal arms are also rather thick, which makes them less realistic than MSE's brass parts.

Many thanks to both of you for the advice regarding MSE. I would have liked to have attended the event at St Albans this weekend but I'm out all day on Saturday and my wife has a whole bunch of chores planned for Sunday!

I've just a quick look at their website and the prices seem very reasonable so I can see an order being placed next week as a trial run. I'll keep you posted!
