It is a ScotRail service.
The traction varies from day to day, so it is impossible to tell what it will be. If your service is direct, it will be either a class 170, or a HST. If it involves a change at Perth, you could have a class 158 or 170 from Kirkcaldy to Perth, and then a class 170 or HST from Perth to Inverness.
For first class, the quality depends on the traction. First class on a HST is miles better than that on a 170. There is no first class on a 158. However, 170s have fewer seats overall, so you may want to go first class to make sure that your mum gets a seat. I have never done ScotRail first class, although I do travel semi-regularly on the Edinburgh/Glasgow to Inverness route.

They are running on the route, but it is not known exactly what services they will run on until the day. ScotRail are still short of HSTs.

If you plan to travel in March ScotRail are running a £5 first class upgrade promotion on the intercity routes. The downside is it's only available if there's space and it may be full by the time it reaches Kirkcaldy.

I wouldn't bother with Scotrail First Class unless (a) you know it's going to be an HST and (b) you can get it at a very decent price like the £5 upgrade.
At the moment I'd say that there are still rather more 170s than HSTs operating Edinburgh-Inverness trains. An added risk is that there's about a 1 in 10 chance of the 170 that turns up not having First Class on it.

You're welcome. I have access to Trust at work, although more recently the Real Time Trains website has been showing information on which specific trains are allocated to Scotrail trains on the day of travel.
