Kings Cross to Cleethorpes - LNER

Has anyone got any further info as to whether LNER will be running trains from Cleethorpes to London KX and if so how often?

Possibly December 2024 I thought was the last estimate and just one train each way. Approx 06:30 ex-Cleethorpes returning from King's X at 16:06.

Yes it is just one return service to Cleethorpes initially and as said extension of the Lincoln service. I am in regular contact with LNER as The City of Hull & Humber Environment Forum and the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce together have been working on this for some years now.

Yes LNER have done a route prover the other month, but David Horne then said it requires authorisation from the DFT due to the additional cost of operating to Cleethorpes.

Indeed, and a journey time of approximately 2h 55m not very competitive with what most people do from northern Lincolnshire, which is park at Newark North Gate for trains to London. Still, it would be convenient and may be very cheap if you book five months in advance.

Google maps gives Cleethorpes to Newark NG as 1 hr 25 minutes by car. Then there is the time to park the car, walk to the platform (15 - 20 minutes to be comfortable ?) and a train journey of about an hour and 20 minutes. That`s the same or a little more as the direct service will be so not uncompetative and you need to factor in high car par charges at Newark, the fuel of course and the stress of worrying about making the train if on an advanced ticket.

Sure. The post above mine wasn't saying there's no benefits, simply that they're not a game changer. The benefits of convenience and comfort are there, and thus a small reduction in generalised journey time, once per day each way. What there isn't, sadly, is a meaningful outright journey time benefit, because the infrastructure between Newark North Gate and Cleethorpes offers a very low maximum permissible speed.

Grimsby Town is still a far more convenient railhead for North Lincs than Newark North Gate or Doncaster are. I hope Market Rasen is served too.

If we're optimistic and say Grimsby Town to London Kings Cross on the AM service can be done in 2h 40m, that saves 15 minutes off the current time on the 0735 departure changing at Doncaster, but of course with the benefit of not having to change trains.

The existing 0730 did have its wait at Newark North Gate cut at least, it used to leave Lincoln at 0710.

Back in the old days when the IC125 used to run the service. In terms of end to end journey times, sometimes the connection used to be quicker. But that was in the days of a 7 minute connections at Newark, that was always held for a late running IC service.

What will be interesting, should it call at Market Rasen if it will generate any new journeys.

At the moment, you get a reasonable run to London at 0630 (I can’t see this train surviving) changing at Newark. If you don’t want to change, drive to Lincoln or Newark (which from Market Rasen really isn’t that much longer overall). I suspect it will just move existing rail journeys to a different starting point. But that isn’t a bad thing anyway.
