THE former owner of a York restaurant and takeaway has been banned indefinitely from managing any food business after inspectors twice found cockroaches.

They were one of several food hygiene and safety problems found at Jorvik Spice on The Mount, in September 2014, that for months had exposed the public to the risk of E. coli contamination and other matters, said Jan Catchpole, prosecuting for City of York Council.

Council pest control experts found "numerous" cockroaches when they set a trap for them on September 24.

"The cockroach infestation was so extensive they were embedded behind the wall cladding in the kitchen," she said.

They had previously found cockroaches at the same premises in September 2011, York magistrates heard.

Aminur Rahman, 44, of Hill Top Mount, Leeds, who owned the York business between February 2011 and March 2015, pleaded guilty to five food safety and food hygiene offences committed between July 29, 2014 and February 11, 2015. He was banned from participating in the management of food premises indefinitely.

His solicitor Laiquat Ali Din said Rahman had sold the restaurant, which was now under new management, and he now worked there as an employee. He was a second chef and didn't want to operate any food business...
This restaurant will - unfortunately - be familiar to some forum members.

I note the individual concerned is still at the restaurant.

I can confirm that the management and staff at the restaurant are incredibly rude and defiantly state they "do not care" about the fact their menus displayed online and in the shop window are hugely inaccurate.

They falsely claim to have a special meal deal, and when you go into the restaurant they say the offer ended.

They made the huge mistake of arguing with us - and they will certainly regret that!

I am pleased to say that we left the restaurant and went somewhere far better.

This place must be avoided at all costs as it's run by extremely dubious, dishonourable individuals with no respect for the law.

And no doubt the 'under new management' means the business has been passed over to another member of the family, he isn't a second chef and is still firmly in charge.

When restaurant/takeaway reputations are soured, 'under new management' is the oldest trick in the book....

Urgh I'm glad we left! Though at least we seemed to dodge a bullet the last time we actually ate there as I don't recall a huge swathe of forum members being laid out afterwards

It would appear the offer has not actually ended! Some will remember that, as we left the place, I said to the chap there that I was sure Trading Standards would be interested, to which he replied he didn't care about Trading Standards. I later found out that it was a matter for the Advertising Standards Authority, so I contacted them. In the past week or so, I've had a reply from them, and they did actually contact this place. I quote from their reply to me:

Having reviewed the issues raised in your complaint, we decided to contact the advertiser to discuss this matter with them directly (without revealing your identity as the complainant). They confirmed that the offer is still valid and available during the days/times specified in the ad. They weren’t sure why you would’ve been informed that the offer had finished but suggested that this was perhaps a misunderstanding.

Given that your experience appears to be the result of a one-off customer service issue rather than a problem with the advertising material in general, we don’t propose taking any further action at this time and shall close our file on that basis.

Personally I don't think there was any misunderstanding, and I wonder if the member of staff we dealt with was Aminur Rahman, who seems to think laws don't apply to him. Although it would be interesting to go back and see if they would honour the offer, in light of what was said to the ASA, I have no intention of going back to see the outcome!
