Is higher education still worth it?

This is an issue that's concerning myself at the moment. I'm at the cross roads of whether to pursue employment or higher education.

I've recently applied for South Bank uni to study digital design, and deferred the application for a year, so I can get a job and see if I prefer working full time rather than uni.

Just wondering if it's worthwhile cancelling my application and pursuing my current full time career, (I currently work in IT support) as I think digital design is one of those generic degrees which employers don't really recognise and it's not a subject I feel passionate enough about. I excelled at IT in college level but it's one of those things I don't have much of an interest in as I'd like to do something more creative.

I'd like to get into a career that involves 3D modelling (I'm not keen on getting into game design though), I would have studied architecture or civil engineering but unfortunately my maths is too bad for that, just wondering if it's worthwhile trying to find Junior draughtsman jobs and working my way up through that way? Is it possible to get a degree purely in 3D modelling?

Any help would be much appreciated.

For example, Oxford Brookes isn't a brilliant university by most guides, but if you want to get into F1, it's the place to be.

Their Formula Student team is rather successful, I seem to recall.
