A quick question: are e- and mobile tickets bought online from one TOC valid on trains operated by another?

Specifically we are planning a crawl between multiple pubs between Shrewsbury & Wolverhampton so want to know if an off peak day return bought online from West Midlands trains would be valid on TfW services and vice versa. And might multiple breaks of journey cause problems if the ticket is scanned multiple times?

I've never used e- and mobile tickets before as, living on the Wirral, I have been avoiding these like the plague owing to Merseyrail's prehistoric attitude to them. On this occasion, I'll be splitting tickets, buying a paper CDR from my local station to Shrewsbury but passing through SHR without alighting.

Yes.

It's nothing to do with e-ticket or m-ticket versus paper ticket. In all cases, they'll be the same ticket, and unless the ticket itself has restrictions limiting its use to a particular operator then it's valid.

Multiple breaks of journey will not cause a problem.

But who you buy the ticket from is unimportant as to its use.

Presumably the £12.90 (before railcard discount, if any) off-peak day return, https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail...ert=on&flow=0&multi=0&fare=6&rte=1000&tkt=CDR

If you're actually going into Wolverhampton on your crawl, make sure you visit The Great Western, not far from Wolves station. Absolutely cracking place. Cheers!

Agreed, I'll be going to Codsall and then Wolverhampton myself on 1 May to meet a friend whom I haven't seen since Covid and have a few beers, a return from Wilmslow to Codsall is valid both via Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton so I'll do a round trip, and in fact I've never been on the Shrewsbury-Wolverhampton line before (apart from Wolverhampton-Codsall and return).
(Oh, and I'll be using a paper ticket because I prefer them, but e-tickets are fine of course.)

The format that a ticket is held on doesn't make any difference to its validity, although there are of course some companies with less enlightened attitudes (ahem, Merseyrail, LU) whose staff may on occasion reject a valid ticket for spurious reasons.

There won't be any such difficulties in the West Midlands though, because e-tickets are widespread and in fact I think it's fair to say most people travel using them, unless they have a season ticket or pass or some description.

Breaking your journey isn't a problem either - simply explain the circumstances to the conductor when you alight your second (or subsequent) train, if they ask.

If you want to use WMT services then of course you need to make sure you buy an 'Any Permitted' fare (shown as 'route dot' for this flow), not one of the slightly cheaper 'TfW only' fares.
