I sometimes look at proposals for new stations and gulp at the ridiculously high cost, but also look at them on a map and think they seem rather close to current stations.
For the cost of a new station you could buy up and demolish a lot of houses (as in one or two houses at a lot of different locations) and buy other land to make new paths/cycle ways, even busways, to create more direct and less traffic heavy low carbon routes to current stations.
Could we make Rail travel viable for far more people via this method than building a handful of new stations?
Obviously this would be far easier under a devolved franchise/concession system with more local control and obviously it would be better to do this AND build new stations but....
