Talk about slave labour! I think this just goes to show you what a greedy, self-centred country this has become. I think this is absolutely disgraceful behaviour coming from a politician who has championed the cause of decent wages for low paid workers. It beggars belief, and is yet another example of how immoral our ruling parliament has become. No wonder people don't vote anymore

Whoops! I'd have thought that the basic employee salary would have been claimable as expenses..

Going off topic slightly, this tactic is also being used by British waterways to cut their HR costs, by doing away with paid gatekeepers etc, and replacing them with unpaid volunteers and enthusiasts, who may not be as well-trained or experienced enough at the job to carry it out safely and proficiently.

[not comparing fashion to boats] The fashion industry and media are also heavily reliant on freelancers who will work for nothing for a long period of time in the hope that one day they will be taken on permanently, which means a lot of heartache for the unsuccessful ones, and a gradual acceptance that it's okay to work for nothing in those industries.

In the short time that I have been a forum member, I have seen enough brain power expanded by forum members to resolve all known rail problem queries that the so-called experts seem incapable of resolving, so a "secondment" of our forum members into Parliament would have solved the problems of the country in no time at all.

Plus we would have the bonus of Mojo being Speaker, to keep every one in good order.

Volunteering has always been considered to some degree to be 'cheap labour'. The fact that they're now using this 'cheap labour' to replace a full-time worker speaks volumes about this government's dedication to their austerity plan for this country.

Volunteering has always been considered to some degree to be 'cheap labour'.

Yes, there have always been "MPs Assistant" posts available, unpaid except through expenses. They have been of immense benefit to anyone wishing to take a role in politics or politics-based media - reward does not necessarily mean money. But to replace a paid worker with a volunteer does seem a tad hypocritical

Nothing wrong with using volunteers as well as paid workers.

But in this case, to use them as replacements for paid workers is labour on the cheap. That's the crux of the matter here.

It is when you replace salaried staff with them. But then again, you could argue she is saving the taxpayer some money by doing so. Hence it would be very interesting to have a look at her expense claims from this point onwards. I wonder if they come down as a result!
