I'm puzzled

Yesterday in the hot afternoon some of the local lads were sitting on the wall of the back lane listening to a woman warbling away on a radio. I asked them who it was and was told "Nelly Farterdoe" [Farturdo?] This caused such hysterical shrieks of laughter than one of them fell off the wall. Why? And who is Nelly Farturdo?
