IE Starts Dundalk Mk3 Scrapping.

Shame to see these starting to get cut up, especially considering the scrambles and the lengths of our UK based operators are going just to get standard Mk3s back into use.

Are they all the Suburban IE Mk3s at Dundalk or a mix of both?

Aren't they totally knackered from a lack of TLC, as well as the Irish built ones not being constructed to the same standard as the BR built ones. I agree it does seem a shame, but I suspect the possibility of reusing them in Great Britain somehow had been looked at by interested parties and ruled out.

yes i believe their all Suburban ones (push pull sets) apparently in a very bad state, symptematic of the sickening IE throw away culture when it comes to rolling stock (and the whole celtic tiger nonsense) i expect the rest of the mark 3s to go shortly, their all probably beyond repair at this stage, a shame as they could have stayed on the hourly cork service and allowed for growth on the belfast service which should be hourly, anyway nothing can be done about it now

Digressing, any info on what is happening with the DART 8200 EMU ? Are they still dumped out of use ? Last I heard they had been offered for sale, but not hear any more, no takers ?

yes dumped out of service, nobody was interested and i can't say i blame them, the units were junk from the start

I don't think they are all ex. Push Pulls. As of 26/02/2013 (the latest info I have), there was 7601, 7101, 7156, 7141, 7170 , 7401, 7612, 7131, 7159, 7154, 7153, as well as 6308, 6305, 6313, 6301, 6306

I don't think the final faith of the Mark3's is know at this stage, most for scrap but a couple may be kept not by IE though.

a few may make it to preservation i hope, any that are any good may go for spairs, i can't see many being able to be put back in some sort of service after being left outdoors for so long, but you never know i suppose

Not all are pushpulls, there were diners and EGVs at Dundalk as well.

Never understood the haste to scrap the p/ps ahead of the conventional ones given their betterflexibility in a railcar orientated railway.

Sad to see them go, but at this stage there was probably no point in letting them languish any further. They advertised for sale to UK operators.

It's a pity though.

As regards preservation, they wouldn't be of any use to RPSI or DCDR (and by extension ITG), nice as it would be to see. There was talk of 6105 (last Inchicore assembled carriage) being earmarked for display at the West Clare Railway.

it was probably to do with the "shur we'l buy new trains and it will be grand" mentality that seemed to sweap through IE during the celtic tiger

There was talk of 6105 (last Inchicore assembled carriage) being earmarked for display at the West Clare Railway.

hopefully that will happen, ridiculous to let something like that go to scrap, only makes me think the amount of stuff we could still have that was sadly lost if we had a national transport museeme, but if it doesn't involve demolishing and selling off the land to little friends or selling things for razerblades then the irish state isn't interested, thankfully though we have private individuals and groups who care about our history and preserving it and long may they exist.
