I've had this idea since childhood and it seems utterly simple. Bright yellow patch on the floor furthest from the doors of every carriage with big black writing saying 'Please stand here when the train is busy' or if we want to be a bit more engaging about it, a smiley face with 'Feet make me happy - please stand on me!' or some such.
Basic passenger self-awareness is going to help overcrowding. We've all seen people packed like sardines by the doors with loads of space further down the carriage. Then someone has to shout to get people to be self-aware and move down, which isn't cool.
