Icelandic Ash Cloud - General Discussion

Hi All

It has just been reported on BBC News at 10 that there has been another volcanic eruption in Iceland and that the ash could reach the UK by Tuesday.

However it shouldn't have so much of an effect on travel as the one last year

I am on my mobile so can't go into more detail or provide links to reports etc - I hope somebody else could do this

I loved the mention of "a different kind of ash". That will work out well where one always hears of "a different kind of snow" in the winter blamed on train delays.

The 1500 London - Glasgow via Edinburgh service (East Coast) is totally fully today. Some of the airline passengers who boarded the train at coach M and walked through the entire train - Maybe the didn't understand that you can walk along the platform instead.

This happens regularly at York station on platform 9 on the First TPE services to Manchester Airport.

I don't think it's forecast to affect England, though. Apparently it's going to affect us for today, perhaps a bit of tomorrow, and it shouldn't go much further South. Bear in mind, of course, that there's more tolerance now than there was last year.

Plenty of different kinds of snow. Ask a skier if you don't believe me. Ash is even more complicated, because snow is basically H2O, while ash is various different types of rock and various different grades of particle size.

Ryanair's boss, Michael O'Leary, has basically said that this is all a myth. Poetic justice would be if he decided to go home by private jet, then had to put down with two dead engines.

It was supposed to be extra fluffy snow that cancelled Eurostar services between London and Paris.

The problem with ash is the fact that it is essentially very fine, yet very sharp volcanic glass and rock (tephra). The main issue of course being the glass which would most likely melt upon entering a hot jet engine. I think the airlines have to be very careful when gambling with peoples lives. It's all very well saying it's a "myth", but that will always be the case until a plane is lost as a result of engine failure...

It is rather unfortunate that we have a cyclone system over the north of England, these of course circulating counterclockwise dragging in the ash cloud from Iceland, a different situation to last year when we had an anticyclone (high pressure) system, bringing in cool air from the north east.

Normal service is now resuming at Scottish airports following yesterday's disruption. Ash may return on Friday, but there's no volcanic ash over UK airspace at this moment in time. Advice is to continue checking.

Of course, as I've mentioned before, there's a higher tolerance for volcanic ash now and e probably won't see another event quite like last years.

Ryanair flow over Scotland (not taking off or landing in the red zone.) They went over the top of the ash and said there were no ash problems.

You misunderstand - HST Power said that because on a number of different threads it was just him and me replying.

Regarding the confusion, there seems to be a second thread about the same matter on the forum, but my earlier comments were due to the fact that myself and ralphchadkirk were the only ones posting this morning.
