Hi,

I'm thinking of going interrailing next summer and planning to go through Germany and wanting to get an original ICE 1 set. Which routes would be best for this? Any advice would be more than welcome!

You can flick through the allocations for all ICE services on this excellent website. https://www.vagonweb.cz/razeni/razeni.php?zeme=DB&kategorie=ICE&rok=2025

Generally every two hours the Köln Hbf / Frankfurt Flughafen Fernbahnhof to Berlin Ostbahnhof / Sud service is worked by a nine carriage ICE 1.

I had the experience of riding a full 12 carriage set on Eurocity 7, running in place of an SBB rake of carriages.

Short notice allocation changes can always happen of course.

I've lost track of the ICE1s - are any still running as 14-car which was the original?

Most have been shortened to 9 intermediate carriages, although a few sets with intermediate 12 carriages remain. Pretty much all of the routes that were traditionally booked to be 12 carriage ICE 1s are now worked by 12/13 carriage ICE 4s.

There's only two sets left running as 2+12 formations: sets 06 and 07. The rest have either been fully refurbished as 2+9 LDV sets or are unrefurbished and shortened to 2+9.
