If the police really are dealing with a minor matter like this, their procedures may well lead to an offer of a caution.

Yes, if:

• it really is being dealt with by the BTP
• the crime being dealt with is only fare evasion or failure to give details
• there's nothing else more serious, such as assault Or disorderly conduct

then the police, who unlike private prosecutors are obliged to apply a public interest test when deciding whether they prosecute, could well resolve this by a simple caution. (A simple caution is a formal ticking-off by a police officer, usually an inspector or above, at the station.)

It should be noted that where a simple caution is given:

• it requires the accused admit guilt
• it will be recorded on the Police National Computer
• it will potentially appear on DBS checks in the future

Although bear in mind that the six months is for the court to be told about the prosecution: the court can then take a while to get in touch with you. As far as I can make out, there's no time limit on the court telling you, but in practice allowing an extra month probably works. Which means that you can't really relax if you haven't heard until maybe 7 months after the incident.

What happened exactly? (I'm guessing you have received a letter informing you they are not interested in pursuing you anymore)

If you upload it here, we can advise you accordingly. Also, who is it from? I see there's some speculation upthread regarding who exactly might be prosecuting you here. Depending on who sent it, you might still be pursued for another offence.
