Hi all,

I'm hoping someone could possibly tell me the following information:

Does EMT run solely un refurbished ex-MML MK3 coaches? How many of EMT's HST power cars are MTUs, and non MTUs?

Similar for NXEC- How many MK3 HST coaches have been refurbished? Does it still have a few Valentia/Non-MTU power cars running around?

Thanks

Hi all,

EMT:All ex MML with original IC70 seats

A fleet of mainly VP185s with a few Valentas soon to be replaced with VP185s. 0 MTUS

NXEC: Got a feeling there are 4 refurbished mallard sets and about half the fleet is MTU

Many thanks Liam for the info ;)

I don't know why, but I got the impression that EMT had a few MTUs, it must be just the replacement VP185 which I got mixed up with....

Silly question- Is there a big difference between the sounds which a Valenta makes, compared to a VP185 engine?

Vp185's lose the scream and most of the clag, they are still a Paxman product though so retain similar. Nat Ex now 5 mallard sets, just over half now mtu.

A list can be found here of all HST fleets, with the NXEC being renumbered following MTUification.

NXEC; 15/32 have been MTUd.

NXEC coaches; Some Mallard sets have been repainted, and I would imagine that Mallards will get the repaint first. Any NX liveried HST set I've been on has been Mallarded, and all unrefurbished and tatty (but comfortable) interiors have not been NXEC liveried as of yet. Of course, project Mallard shall continue.

The last (and only recent) time I was on an unrefurbished train, there was a Mallard buffet car :? Is this standard now, or are there still unrefurbished buffets floating around?

Vps still have the scream but is more subdued and only becomes audible when going around full thottle.

That shows what they sound like, you can just make out the scream at the end of the video, apologies about wind noise. Some of them certainly can clag though.

VP185s clagging more than Valentas?! Never heard of such a prospect before.

43045 is a good 'un with its VP185. I'm sure Dave will remember its whistling from when we did the Toton diversion way back in October.

But I've never seen a VP185 clagging more than a Valenta. Special exception to 43048 way back on 28th April 2007 when I had it on the 11xx from Derby to Leicester. I had thought it was a Valenta on the back to begin with, but I do believe there was a buggered piston (or something) messing the exhaust up rather than it being a proper clagger.

Living on the MML which is full of VP185s, I've seen many VP185s clag more than Valenta's but I guess its down to each separate occasion as there are lots of reasons clag is formed.

Clearly, you've not had a Valenta on a good day...Plenty of MML clagmaster examples out there. 046, 054, 058, 064, 083 (all of which I've personally had or seen photos of extreme clag from) are particular examples of claggy Valentas on the Midlands.

And I have nothing but praise for good ole 43107 with NXEC. Filled Aberdeen station with clag on about 2 minutes <D

Oh yes, 43107 'Tayside'. Brilliant power car, I remember watching it clag out Kings Cross quite nicely earlier in the year! Had it on the last ever GNER service out of Kings Cross last year, when it was started up my jaw almost hit the floor!

I was standing beside it as they started her up before they boarded (Platform 5 at ABD; anyone who's boarded an HST there'll know how far forward it has to come to fit in) and i couldn't believe my eyes when I saw her clag <D HELLFIRE!!!

The roof is a nice toasty colour from where they've started in the past.

Some VP185s have Marston coolers! I once upgrade myself to FC (£6 - great value especially London-Leeds) to be next to (what I thought was) a Valenta having heard the Marston in full song at St Pancras, then when we departed I was wondering where the thrash was, then I realised it was a VP185.

However, as mentioned above, once they get into the higher notches they scream and sound pretty good. It's just you lose those hellfire departures that you get from Valentas :(

If a Valenta is 10/10, I'd give a VP185 without a Marston 6/10, a VP185 with a Marston 7 or 8, and an MTU 1. But that's just my opinion ;)

MTUs, they're still HSTs, so still pretty good in my book! And 43208 is a pretty good example. Maybe not hellfire, but definately a decent noise on it.

Nice to hear 208 is performing nicely, when she was 008 she was supreme...

I was surprised to see on Saturday of last week that GNER had not refurbished some of there HST Mk3 Coaches and at how grubby and tired looking on the inside one of them was.

But i was impresed at the speed and ride quiality of them i must say but i notice they are a little bouncy at times.

How did they get away with such a thing as i thought TOCs had to Refurbish or Refresh them every 5 years or so ?

One set was an ex MML set which was to provide cover for the NXEC HST fleet refurb (which finishes soon) and thus set would then undergo a refurb for FGW and then enter service with FGW, displacing some cl180's which may end up back with NXEC.

So in other words, mid refurb the stock will always include some sets which have not been refurb'd.
