HST to Falmouth.

FGW are sending a HST to Falmouth to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the line on Sunday 25th August. It will be running prior to the first service of the day so expected at 0930. The advert I seen (in Truro) said timings were to be confirmed, but it would run out to Falmouth and back immediately before the first normal service of the day.

It's a shame my hols are in September otherwise that looks like a nice trip (One of my little pleasures is using buffet cars on routes that don't usually get them )

I don't know what the situation is like for the rest of Devon and Cornwall, but those timings mean that there is no train that makes it for anyone who lives north of Plymouth.

nope, in living memory for me (I'm 25) we've only had DMUs and occasional steam tours.

Think the last time at least for a HST was in the 1990's on a Hertfordshire Railtours HST Special, one of the few 100 they did. It started up north somewhere.

2000 and something was to see a pair of 37's there on a Pathfinder jolly, and I booked it for the novelty but alas was cancelled for good.

Can't go on this myself as I'm on the Cardiff railtour, but for those in the west there is a NatEx coach that get's to Truro for 7am on the Sunday morning, should be the overnight NatEx London - Penzance job.

Probably has grandfather rights so the short platform would not be a problem, as occurs at places like Stonehouse.

From the media reports and FGW press release it says it will not be possible for passengers to board or exit the train at any of the stations along the branch line, so I am guessing the short platforms will be irrelevant other than for the driver.

IIRC Falmouth Docks platform is much shorter than most stations a HST calls at in Cornwall - someone with a Trackmaps of the SW will have the exact length.

A look at photos with a 150 in the station I would say it is 1 1/2 - 2 150's in length.

3-car according to Quail, not the most accurate guideline though, using it as a basis I'd guess anything from 55m-70m

In the last year of the Falmouth-Paddington Saturdays Only service, I had a Class 50 for haulage, I don't think it was the last Saturday of the service but it was September, as for the year I cannot remember until I look up my notebook.

I cant see any trains from north of Truro that get there in time, the first southbound arrival is at 1033.

Correct, and only one train from Penzance prior to 0930.
