HS2 & NPR Service Proposal

Given the latest High Speed 2 (HS2) and Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR) news, I’m wondering what the impact could be on service provision across the HS2/NPR network. We no know the following:
  • The Department for Transport (DfT) prioritising the western leg to Manchester
  • A 6-platform HS2/NPR station at Piccadilly,
  • A 4-platform station at Manchester Airport,
  • 4 Liverpool-Manchester services and 6 Leeds-Manchester services per hour.
Therefore if the eastern leg is not built, this impacts upon to London & Birmingham service pattern. As such, would it be better to combine the Birmingham to Manchester & Leeds services giving us the following:
  • 3 London-Leeds via East Coast Mainline (ECML)
  • 4 Liverpool-Manchester-Leeds (with 2 continuing to Newcastle & Edinburgh)
  • 2 Birmingham-Manchester-Leeds (with 1 continuing to Newcastle & Edinburgh)
Without the eastern leg, I would expect a route via Manchester would be faster to Leeds from Birmingham than the current Cross Country (XC) service.
