Seen a couple of posts where OP mention they got caught with a child/60+/discounted etc pass that belongs to someone else.

How does one exactly get caught. Is it when one swipes at the gate and the staff are alerted to check or one has to be unlucky enough to be physically checked/inspected and then get caught?

Eg: on the buses here, using a child pass to get on the bus alerts the driver and they quickly glance if the pass holder is indeed a student. Similarly for using the pensioners pass.

Either. High value passes have a different validation light sequence than a regular Oyster or contactless card.

Like shooting fish in a barrel really.

Is it only me who finds it odd that two instances have appeared so close together...

They’re only the latest two of dozens of similar threads. It’s very common to be stopped at barriers for checks if using any high value pass.

If the pass has photo ID then it's obviously easy to check. And there aren't that many around that gateline staff can't check most that are used.
If a card doesn't have photo ID than it's virtually impossible unless it's an age related card and the user is in a different age group.
