How clean are your buses?

I think it might be down on how some people treat their local area, as someone else has said on the thread that buses in Barnsley were filthy - this could be down to how the local kids have been brought up not to look after the area in which they live, this habit is then passed onto the next generation who in turn will no doubt pass it onto the next and before you know it the local buses have become a mobile household waste site.

On a late night journey on the 363 that I took in the summer (a single deck no doubt) the near seating footwell was covered in bits of half eaten unwanted kebab or burger, mushed in chips and a discarded can that had been stamped on complete with a ruined copy of the Metro that has been stepped on - needless to say the bus had slowly turned into a bio-hazard.

I tend to find it varies a lot by operator. I find Transdev Keighley's buses are often much clearer than First Leeds, Bradford and Halifax buses - and I wouldn't put that down to differences in the type of people who live in those areas. Transdev do seem to take a bit more pride in the appearance of their buses - I don't know if that rubs off on people with them treating them a bit better.

I use Canavan Travel getting to and from work and the ex London Darts that they use are absolutely filthy minging. Even a sweep would be a bonus...

First Huddersfield would benefit from having staff at the bus station to do a bit of simple litter picking on buses that are laying over between trips. Plus the ALX400s need a deep clean, the filth between the seats is not great.

I've suggested this to Arriva. They give every excuse under the sun why they can't, yet Trent Barton and NXWM manage it.

Further evidence of a serious attitude problem at the corporate level (which will of course filter down as a result of staff not being respected when they raise issues).

Something unsatisfactory, to the effect that the cleaning facilities were at the depot and it was all done at the end of the day.

Transdev employ cleaners to give the buses a tidy up on arrival at Keighley, it's probably the same at Harrogate. First and Arriva don't.

Also First's W, X reg ALX400s won't ever have had any sort of refurbishment or deep clean since they were new. They had a hard life in Leeds and were then transferred, as is, to Halifax/Huddersfield.


I recall catching a afternoon peak hour trip on a Go North East bus, which was a president on an otherwise branded route that had obviously run off schools (or a scholars as they call them up there), and there were sandwiches strewn around the bus which wasn't very pleasant.

It wouldn't really be worth First or Arriva's while employing cleaners at Keighley . More seriously - from experience it can make quite a difference to a bus just getting a 2 minute sweep round before going out again.

In fairness I have seen some littered First buses in Bristol, but yeah I think it is worse up here.

I used to use the 126/7 routes from Mountsorrel. I never remember them being dirty, or the 5's when I lived in Syston, and the 158's when I lived in Earl Shllton. This was between 2007 and 2012 though so maybe they're not as clean now.

Saying that, the dirtiest buses I've seen down there recently were Arriva buses, in Derby and Uttoxeter.

In my opinion, Arriva need to make a greater effort to keep their buses clean. Incentivise your drivers to clear up once you've reached your destination. Insure that your buses all have cctv to catch some of the worse offenders. If they are school kids, let their schools know. They hate bad publicity. It's a peculiarly British problem with litter and behaviour. Let's start fighting back and make bus travel the natural choice for travel where trains and trams are not an option.
