That makes more sense - the point of brushing your teeth is to clean away any stuck food, etc.

It's allegedly worse to brush straight after eating because the tooth enamel is weakened, especially if you've eaten acidic things like orange juice. Best to wait 30 minutes.

Given that I normally chuck my breakfast down the hatch 30 seconds before leaving the house, I brush before.

Many years ago my wife knew someone who had two dishwashers in his flat. One contained cups, plates and so on that were clean because they'd recently been washed. As he used these things for cooking and eating he'd put them in the second one. When that was full he'd use it to wash the contents. This would be the point by when all the clean stuff in the first one had been utilised. Over the next few days he'd slowly fill up the first one again with equipment that he'd used. Maybe it was extravagant to have two dishwashers, but he didn't use much water or energy, and he was also saving on kitchen storage.

Once had a BR era workmate who "never married" - had no washing machine and took infrequent baths (known as "Pongo") - he admitted when he had a (rare) bath he threw his workclothes into the water and did a treading motion and then put them on the line.

We never asked him to make the tea.

Did he ever get pulled up for his clear lack of hygiene?

I think there still a few people around like that.

Only having baths once a week, (I think that goes back to a few years ago when it was a faff to run a bath, instead one had a tin bath in the Kitchen filled with kettles from the stove on Fri or Sat nights, the father went in first, followed by the mother, then the kids and if it was a large family the kids at the end probably came out no cleaner than when they went in.)

I heard too of someone who boasted he could make one pair of underpants last for about 12 days, by turning them around, then inside out, back to front, using leg holes as waist and other permutations. I have not tried this myself, the mind boggles.

Yes - he was asked to see the Area Maintenance Manager after a petition by some of his workmates , duly presented with advice and carbolic soap. ! Still pretty unsavoury (especially in the Summer months)

We had one of those. Luckily he was out most of the day, but all the obvious hints failed (presents of soap, deoderant etc) failed to work. He did eventually leave!
