There's a discussion in another forum about loco restoration, and the size of the loco and running costs. All preservation should be from the heart, we would't do it if we didn't like it. But at what point should the head rule?

You might be referring to the P2 project? In my opinion although it may get built and it will certainly look amazing it would be a far more sensible use of money to build a medium sized poer unit like a V3 or A8 which would be ideal for a preserved line and could also go on seconary main lines. The running costs of a P2 must be fearsome and of course if NR decided to ban steam you'd be screwed as it would only be runnable on the largest heritage lines.
By comparision the Lynton & Barnstaple's new build of "Yeo" is very practical and satisfying to both heart and head (and wallet).
