Is there anywnere where the 1974 changes have gone beyond the purely organisational and really created new loyalties and feelings of identity? They certainly seem to have failed pretty spectacularly so to do in the old counties of Lancashire and Yorkshire (all three Ridings, and York). But historic attachments are not just a British thing, are they. The East German Bezirke never managed to replaced the old Länder identities for many people, which is in part why it was so easy to restore the Länder after re-unification. Or what about France, where even after a couple of hundred years and more the Départements did not totally replace the historic Regions in people's minds?

In West Yorkshire it looks odd having Otley as part of Leeds and Ilkley & Keighley as part of Bradford. If anything, Leeds and Bradford should have self-contained City Councils and Otley, Ilkley & Keighley together as a potential Wharfedale District Council.

I'm not knocking the idea, but I think it needs a different name, what with Keighley being in Airedale.

Philip Davies, MP for Shipley, is forever arguing for something similar.

I guess my overall conclusion is that there is no obvious one way of governance and there is clearly always going to be a lot of compromise.

In terms of places that have been pleased to have been shifted around because of administrative changes (especially those of 1974), the only place that I can think of is Warrington, which appears not to believe its good fortune to have been somewhat implausibly "up-statused" from Lancashire to Cheshire.

Certainly it is pretty much the only place that I can think of where I am not aware of a longstanding campaign to get the 1974 administrative changes reversed (e.g. Southport to Lancashire, the Wirral to Cheshire)

There is currently a consultation open on the future of Government in England.

A more apt name might be Metropolitan Borough of South Dales.

... and here's me thinking that all these local government organisation changes were designed to feather the pension pots of the senior council employees.
