Hard drive data recovery help MK2

Hi everyone,

A little while ago I posted about recovery of data supposedly lost on an external hard drive, well all that worked out well. This time my question is about a hard drive built into a computer.

My computer didn't work and prior to that it was only useable in safe mode, well eventually it stopped working all together, so I enlisted in the help of a young friend to come and fix it.

So roughly what he did was, he transferred what was on the hard drive or at least one of them and rebooted it in some way and put windows 7 on it, so now it works fine and I personally have no problems with it, but in the process of wiping the hard drive, there were apparently another or 2 more hard drives on it, one of which contained something like 600gig of stufff, so I'm told anyway.

Question is, is it possible to recover data that has been cleared off a hard drive inside the computer?

My knowledge of computers is equal to that of Paris Hiltons knowledge of advanced physics, so yeah.

Any help would be great.

Not entirely clear about exactly what you are asking but, if the original hard drive had more than one drive on it in separate partitions and the drive has been re-formatted with a single partition then the answer is probably no although much depends on how it was formatted.
If you had multiple hard drives then there shouldn't be a problem; those other drives should be unchanged so I'm guessing that isn't the case here.
There are specialist companies that will try to extract data from erased or formatted disks. This kind of service comes at a price and is probably more than you will want to pay. Google will find them for you if you think it's worth trying and the lost data is sufficiently important.

If the data is important to you, ask a professional company that you trust. Some will charge no fee if they are unable to get any data back. In the mean time, do not use the hard drives affected.

By the way a hard drive isn't 'built in' to a computer, it is a component in it's own right. A computer consists of several components, which usually (but not always) includes a hard drive. An internal hard drive can easily be removed.

Ok, thanks for all the info, I will have to find out exactly how the hard drives were cleared. I'm told there was something like movies and TV shows going back 5 or so years and that there was around 600gig worth, as well as other stuff, so we'll see what happens.
