Hammer head carriage keys

I have seen several illustrations of carriage keys with a handle shaped as a small claw hammer. They seem to have been issued by several railways including the LNER and BR(E).

What I would like to know is: what was the purpose of the hammer head? What would a guard or inspector need to hammer in or remove from the coaching stock with this implement?

Odd that I haven't had any replies on this one as I wold have thought there would be someone out there who wold know.

I might be completely wrong on this but are people reluctant to talk about old carriage keys for some reason?
