Four of us will be arriving at Hamburg International Airport in December. We are not getting a hire car because we have heared that the railways of Hamburg are very good. So, what are our ticketing options for traveling in and around the city, all day tickets etc, and can they be bought at the airport? Group tickets etc? And are they valid on the harbour ferries too?

You don't need a hire car, in fact unless you're spending a lot of time outside the city, it's a hindrance.

The public transport really is excellent in Hamburg, it covers all parts of the city and runs frequently. The S-Bahn line S1 will take you directly from the Airport to the Hauptbahnhof (central station) in about 25 minutes.

I don't know how long your trip is, but it might be worth considering the Hamburg CARD (Group). The 3-day version costs about 35 euros for a GROUP ticket (that covers all four people in your party), and entitles you to travel on all forms of public transport within the city boundaries. Public transport includes the local buses, U-Bahn (underground), S-Bahn (surburban railway), regional trains and also the scheduled harbour ferries ran by HVV. Boat trips and tour buses aren't included. There aren't any peak time restrictions on the ticket either.

It also offers various discounts on:

-City-sightseeing bus tours and boat trips around the port or on the River Alster
-Places of interest, attractions and museums
-Participating restaurants and shops

You can actually buy it off this website (www.hamburg-tourism.de/en/search-booking/hamburg-card) and have it delivered to your house. It can also be bought from all ticket machines in the Hamburg Area. That website also has lots of tourist info about Hamburg.

I have lived in the nearby city of Bremen (lovely lesser known city to visit as well), which is about a one hour train ride away from Hamburg, so feel free to ask any further questions.

Thanks for the replies. The 3 day group ticket sounds great, we are there for three full days. Only been to Hamburg breifly when we went to the Miniature wonderland, which was amazing in its self. Hamburg looked amazing as a city with the harbour and industrial yet contempary parts of the city, so we are going back. Other half wants to go to the DOM and the Zoo, i want to go to the Wonderland again, and we have a day spare to see the rest of the city. I saw something about some steam boats too but cant find reference to it anywhere now. I could have just sat on the main railway station for an hour watching, real trains, and general feel good atmosphere and that was just the station. Our hotel is the Graf Novum (without checking paper work) just off the main station. Cheeers.

I would also recommend a visit to the Alte Elbtunnel and the St Pauli Flak Tower

i wouldn't mind a look at the elb tunnel. even better that cars can still use it!

No Trip to Hamburg is complete with a Trip to see St Pauli play ( football ) really is an amazing atmosphere.
